Oscar Pistorius is set to be released from prison next week, 10 months after he was jailed for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, reports say. The athlete was acquitted of murdering his girlfriend on Valentines Day in 2013, but was found guilty of manslaughter by shooting her four times through a door.
Pistorius was sentenced to five years prison but was made eligible for release after serving a sixth of his sentence. He will be released under “correctional supervision”, a concession given to offenders guilty of serious crimes but who are not considered a danger to the community.
The fallen star will be under virtual house arrest, according to The Telegraph. He must not consume alcohol, drugs or touch guns and will take anger management courses. He will need special consideration from a parole officer to leave the house. The Telegraph reports due to the conditions of his release, it will be unlikely he will be able to compete again.
South Africa has a notoriously dangerous and overcrowded prison system. Pistorius’ good behaviour in jail was taken into account.
