Matija Sarkic was an English-born Montenegrin professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for the Montenegro national team.
Tragically, Sarkic passed away on June 15, 2024, at the young age of 26.
Early Life & Family
Sarkic was born on July 23, 1997, in Grimsby, England. His father, Bojan Šarkić, is a Montenegrin diplomat who served as the country’s ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. His mother, Natalie Šarkić-Todd, is British and works at a European media network. Matija had a twin brother, Oliver, who is also a footballer. He is 26 years old.
Career
Sarkic began his football journey in the youth academies of Belgian giants Anderlecht and later English Premier League club Aston Villa. Despite his early promise, he spent much of his career on loan at various clubs, including Wigan Athletic, Stratford Town, Havant & Waterlooville (all in England), and Livingston FC in Scotland.

In 2020, he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers but continued his loan spells at Shrewsbury Town, Birmingham City, and Stoke City. Finally, in August 2023, he secured a permanent move to Millwall FC, where he established himself as the starting goalkeeper. He made 33 appearances for the club before his untimely passing.
International Career
Sarkic opted to represent his father’s homeland, Montenegro, on the international stage. He made his debut for the national team in 2019 against Belarus and most recently started in a friendly match against Belgium in June 2024.
