LG Autonomy: Supreme Court judgment

Recall that on Thursday, July 11, the Supreme Court granted financial autonomy to local governments in Nigeria. Additionally, the ruling authorized the federal government to withhold allocations from any local government that has not conducted elections.

The apex court ruled that governors cannot use their own caretaker committees to run local councils and must stop dissolving elected officials. It confirmed that local government is Nigeria’s third tier of government and should operate independently.
