I’d Choose 20 Years in Prison Over Singing ‘Tinubu’s Anthem’ – Aisha Yesufu

Activist Aisha Yesufu declared that she would rather spend 20 years in prison than sing the new national anthem, which she calls “Tinubu’s anthem.”

Her statement follows reports about a proposed Bill, sponsored by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, that suggests a 25-year imprisonment, a N10 million fine, or both for individuals convicted of actions leading to separatist agitations or inter-group conflicts in Nigeria.

According to The Sun, the Bill also proposes penalties for anyone who destroys national symbols, refuses to recite the national anthem and pledge, or defaces places of worship with violent intent, including fines of N5 million,10 years imprisonment, or both.

In response, Yesufu took to X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I’d choose 20 years in prison over singing Tinubu’s anthem passed by slaves masquerading as lawmakers in the National Assembly.”
