The Federal Government of Nigeria has called for a thorough investigation into the suspicious death of Nigerian footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda.

Lawal, who played professionally for Vipers Sports Club, reportedly fell from the third floor of Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on Monday morning under unclear circumstances.

FG Demands Transparency in Investigation

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, expressed deep concern, stating that the incident raises suspicions. She emphasized that the Nigerian High Commissioner to Uganda, Ambassador Shama Shanga, has demanded a full autopsy and a transparent investigation.

What Happened to Abubakar Lawal?

According to preliminary reports from Ugandan authorities, Lawal had visited a friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national, at the shopping mall. Naima, who had been staying in Room 416 since February 20, 2025, left Lawal preparing tea while she went to a nearby game centre.

Shortly after, at around 8:00 AM, Lawal reportedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Authorities Reviewing CCTV Footage

Police have recovered Lawal’s personal belongings, including:

✅ A pair of open shoes
✅ Headsets
✅ Training kit
✅ Chargers

All items were found in his black backpack. Authorities are currently analyzing CCTV footage and conducting interviews as part of their ongoing probe.
