Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have successfully rearrested a fugitive inmate, Kabiru Oyedun, who escaped from the Ilesa Correctional Centre in Osun State following a jailbreak triggered by a torrential downpour.

The 39-year-old escapee was captured on Tuesday, May 21, 2025, around 5:30 pm in the Ayobo area of Lagos by officers from the Ayobo Division. His arrest comes just one day after he broke out of the Medium Security Custodial Centre through a section of the perimeter wall weakened by heavy rainfall on May 20.

Police Confirm Arrest and Credit Proactive Security Measures

The spokesperson of the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed Oyedun’s arrest on Friday, attributing the swift operation to the state’s proactive and preventive security measures aimed at stopping criminal elements from infiltrating Lagos.

“Kabiru Oyedun was trailed and arrested in Ayobo by operatives attached to Ayobo Division. This success is largely due to the proactive and preventive measures put in place by the Command,” Hundeyin stated.

Inmate Among Seven Who Escaped Ilesa Prison

Kabiru Oyedun was one of seven inmates who escaped from the Ilesa facility following the breach of the prison’s fence. In response to the jailbreak, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) launched a manhunt and offered a ₦5 million reward for information that could lead to the recapture of the escapees.

“To encourage public participation, the Nigerian Correctional Service is offering a ₦5 million reward to anyone who provides useful information that leads to the recapture of the fleeing inmates from the Medium Custodial Centre, Ilesha, Osun State,” the NCoS said in a public statement.

Authorities have disclosed that Kabiru Oyedun will be handed over to the Nigerian Correctional Service for onward transfer to Osun State, where he will return to custody at the Ilesa Correctional Centre.
