Renowned Nigerian highlife icon and folklorist, Mike Ejeagha, has passed away at the age of 95.

TSB News reports that the legendary musician died on the night of Friday, June 6, 2025, at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after battling a prolonged illness.

His death was confirmed by his eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, in a phone conversation.

Ejeagha was a cultural treasure known for transforming Igbo folklore and proverbs into timeless musical masterpieces. His unique style of storytelling through highlife music not only entertained but also educated generations of Nigerians.

One of his most popular tracks, “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo”, saw a resurgence in July 2024 after comedian and skit maker Brian Jotter remixed the song, introducing Mike Ejeagha’s work to a new generation of music lovers.

His influence peaked in the 1980s, but his contributions to the preservation of the Igbo language and oral tradition remain unmatched to this day.

Tributes are pouring in from fans, fellow musicians, and cultural bodies across Nigeria, all celebrating his legacy as a pioneer of highlife music and a custodian of traditional storytelling.

In recognition of his cultural impact, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah visited Ejeagha in September 2024, renamed the street leading to his home in his honour, and pledged to cover his medical expenses.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in the coming days.

May the soul of this musical legend rest in peace. Amen.
