The 36 states of the federation should be reduced to six in order to reduce cost of governance in the country, Senator Senator Shehu Sani, said. Sani, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts, has said the country should come up with six states in line with the geopolitical zones and that Abuja should be retained as the capital.
He also called for the abolition of the bicameral National Assembly, saying the present system amounts to duplication of responsibilities. Sani, who recently raised alarm over the debt profile of state governments, said Nigeria can only afford one parliament.
“We must make the necessary constitutional amendments which will include reduction in the number of ministers and ministries. We must as a nation support President Buhari to put Nigeria back on track,” he said.
He said the proposed Nigerian economic conference must not be a talk shop for praise singing or missile launching.
He said the proposed Nigerian economic conference must not be a talk shop for praise singing or missile launching.
“The conference must seek to practically address and proffer pragmatic solutions that will rescue our country from its current state. The proposed economic conference must be result-oriented, aimed at setting a roadmap for our economic revival, growth, diversification and prosperity. The conference can only make a difference if it can fundamentally lead to the economic restructuring of Nigeria,” he said. He lamented that political leaders exploited the defect in the political order and the availability and accessibility of public funds and plundered state treasuries for themselves and their family members.
