Miguel Albuquerque, the president of Madeira, has confirmed that the island’s main airport will be renamed the Madeira Cristiano Ronaldo airport following Ronaldo & Portugal’s success at Euro 2016. The 31-year-old already has a bronze statue, a museum and a hotel named after him in Funchal – his birthplace and the capital of Madeira.
The Real Madrid star is reportedly back on the island after holidaying in Ibiza ahead of the new La Liga season. He returned to Funchal on Friday to visit family and officially open his new five-star hotel called Hotel Pestana CR7. Ronaldo, advised by agent Jorge Mendes, has a number of business interests away from football including his own clothing line and fragrance.
The hotel is described as being ‘exclusive to the 21st century global travellers’ and is Funchal’s ‘new hotspot’. And although he will have allowed himself a chance to relax back home, his focus will no doubt be on getting fit after suffering injury at the European Championship.
The 31-year-old holds Portugal’s first European trophy aloft as he celebrates the extra-time win with his side.
