A delegate from Ondo State, Dr. Yemi Mahmud-Fasominu, has called for the castration of rapists to serve as deterrent to others. Speaking on Monday at the National Conference, she also blamed the country’s woes on insincerity and greed. “That is why when we see a  section holding on to power, other sections become agitated,” she said. Fasominu called for a special court for victims of violence and rape to seek redress.

She pointed out that victims might not feel comfortable going to regular courts because of stigmatisation. “Unfortunately some of the victims cannot come out in the regular court because of victimisation. Such men should be brought to book and be incarcerated,” she said. Senator Anthony Adefuye said the police, corruption and the religion were the causes of the problems confronting Nigeria. “I classified the problems into three – corruption, religion and the Nigerian Police popularly known as ‘happy weekend, sir’.”

“If you want to address corruption, you must have a good police. If you want to stop terrorism, you must have a good police. When you get to his side in the night and all the policeman says is ‘happy weekend sir’, what type of policing is that? “Even the religious now take money from the poor to buy jets; from  people who have no shoes who come to them for solution.” He advocated for a common religious body “where the Muslims and the Christians will sit together” to address religious challenges. An elder statesman delegate representing the Federal Capital Territory, Gen. A.B. Mamman, said the timing of the conference was wrong.

“Nigeria issues are too serious to be considered over a period of three months if we must do justice to them. But we will make the best of the situation,” he said. He added that, “What is responsible for insecurity is endemic poverty, hopelessness, injustice, irresponsible politicking, inconsistency and irresponsible leadership.”

Do you agree with castration for rapists? What if its a girl that rapes a man?
