Bus Conductor Arraigned For Biting Passenger’s Ear Over Fare

A 32-year-old  bus conductor, Taiye Ajayi, was yesterday, charged with biting off the ear of a passenger at an Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court, Lagos. Ajayi, whose address is unknown, is being tried for unlawfully inflicting wounds. The prosecutor, Corporal Oluwafemi Adeleye, told the court that the accused bit off the ear of one Kabiru Olugbemi for allegedly refusing to pay his fare.

Adeleye said the accused committed the offence at MicCom Bus Stop, Egbeda, a Lagos suburb, on August 23, at about 8.30 p.m.

He said: “The passenger boarded a bus from Oshodi to Egbeda and informed the conductor about the little money he had on him as fare.

“The accused demanded for the balance of the fare when he got to the bus stop and thereafter a fight ensued. “In the process, the accused bit off Kabiru’s ear.”

Adeleye said the offence contravened Section 244 (a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The accused may be sentenced to three years imprisonment on conviction. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the offence. The Magistrate, Mr P.E. Nwaka, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. The case has been adjourned till October 6, for trial.
