Prosecutors have sought the death penalty for 14-year-old Wasila Tasi’u after translating an alleged confession which she ‘signed’ with her thumb, despite not being able to read it. Her husband Umar Sani, who had a second wife who gave evidence in the trial, died days after marrying her in Nigeria’s northern Kano state. Human rights campaigners have expressed outrage at the trial, saying Wasila should be treated as a victim of abuse. Nigeria is not known to have executed a child since military rule in 1997.
Would it be right for her to be executed even is she’s under 18 years? Was she really a victim of abuse?
