Mick Fanning fights off a SHARK as it attacked him during J-Bay Open

Amazing footage shows the moment Australian surfing legend Mick Fanning fought off a shark that attacked him during a competition. Fanning, a three-time world champion, was knocked from his board  just moments into the final round of the J-Bay Open in South Africa.

Fanning said: ‘I was just sitting there and I felt something just get stuck in my leg rope, and I was kicking trying to get it away,’ the surfing star said later (right). The 34-year-old described the moment he realised the shark was behind him as terrifying, saying: ‘I was waiting for the teeth to come at me.’

The distressing situation could be easily seen from the coast, with footage showing the shark thrashing around'It came up and got stuck in my leg rope,' Mr Fanning said. 'I instantly just jumped away. It kept coming at my board and I was kicking and screaming'
