Under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, the Federal Communications Commission plays a crucial role in helping consumers stop unwanted calls, text messages and faxes

The various options under the facility are:

“SMS 1” for receiving SMS relating to banking, insurance/financial products to 2442;

“SMS 2” for receiving SMS relating to real estate to 2442,

“SMS 3” for receiving SMS relating to education to 2442;

“SMS 4” for receiving SMS relating to health to 2442;

“SMS 5” for receiving SMS relating to consumer goods and automobiles to 2442.

“SMS 6” for receiving SMS relating to communication/broadcasting entertainment/IT to 2442,

“SMS 7” for receiving SMS relating to tourism and leisure to 2442,

“SMS 8” for receiving SMS relating to sports to 2442, “SMS 9” for receiving SMS relating to religion to 2442.”

The easiest way to stop unwanted SMS on your phone irrespective of any network is to send STOP to 2442. The sms is free.

  • Google your phone number to find all the websites you may have publicly posted your phone number on, simply type your mobile number into Google.com. The search results should include links websites you can check, edit or delete your number from.
    You might need to contact the website owner to do this for you if appropriate permission is not available.
  • Unsubscribe from SMS Services. At the end of most spam SMS messages; there’s an option to OPT OUT of future messages. E’g – Text STOP to be removed from this service. Look out for that.
    For MTN Subscribers: Text STOP to 33111 – This will remove you from most Advertising offers.

  • Contact your Mobile Operator The customer care unit of Mobile network operators are always ready to listen and offer solutions to your problems. I strongly suggest you give them a call or Visit the branch office near you.
  • Contact NCC The Nigerian Communication Commission Issues Licenses and regulates the activities of Mobile Network operators by making sure they meet required standards. I you feel the networks are not operating in accordance, file a complaint on the NCC Website using this Consumer Online Complaint Form
  • Change Mobile Networks When all attempts to get a solution fail, there’s only one thing left to do – Quit!. With the launch of the New Sim card portability, you can switch to different network service provider without loosing your Number or contacts.

Mobile network operators have been directed to ensure full compliance with the directive on July 1 or risk a fine of N5 million only
