Mariah Carey has identified a culprit in her breakup with billionaire businessman James Packer: Scientology. Packer’s business manager, Tommy Davis, formerly served as a spokesperson for the Church of Scientology, and sources say that he was the one to disrupt the romance.

According to those close to Carey, Davis has not only usurped control over Packer’s finances, but also urged him to begin a “Purification Rundown” — a Scientology detox program. And last but not least, Davis has purportedly demanded that Packer break with Carey.

Packer practiced Scientology from 2002 until 2006, but when Carey arrived on his yacht on mid-September, she sensed that he was somehow altered, and suspected Scientology as the cause. She even asked him point blank, “What is going on, are you back in Scientology?” Soon after, she was forced by his staff to vacate the premises.

Carey blames Davis specifically for influencing Packer, suggesting that he is exerting significant power by handling the billionaire’s purse strings and more generally dictating his way of life. Davis purportedly questioned the amount of money Packer was spending on Carey and demanded that they cut back on the funds to which she was entitled.

However, a source near to Packer denies these allegations, asserting that Packer severed his tie with Carey because she is “a diva.”

“James isn’t the kind of guy who listens to someone else when it comes to his private life,” the source argued. “His relationship with Mariah ended because she is a diva, she has an entourage around her, and she’s filming a TV show, which is a crazy world James doesn’t want to be involved with.”

The source also emphasized that Packer is no longer affiliated with Scientology and that Davis does not have the power Carey believes him to possess — but they do imply that he has “made suggestions” regarding Packer’s spending.

Meanwhile, Carey is demanding a $50 million settlement for “emotional distress.” I’ve never been a fan of that terminology, but in this case, well — it seems applicable. Carey moved to Los Angeles to be with Packer only to be turned out of the house. She also has canceled a number of concerts in South America due to her upset over the breakup.
