A man who ignored advice not to go swimming after getting a new tattoo has died after catching a flesh-eating bug and developing sepsis. The 31-year-old had a crucifix and a pair of hands praying inked on his right calf shortly before his tragic death. He was warned to wait two weeks to allow the wounds to heal before going for a dip.But the man ignored the advice and went for a swim in the Gulf of Mexico after just five days.Soon after, he developed fever, chills and a rash around the tattoo, according to a report in the British Medical Journal

Just 24 hours after being admitted to hospital, the man was hooked up to life support machines after his organs began to fail. His body went into septic shock, with the infection triggering an immune response which attacked his own organs. After two weeks, he tragically died after the septic shock caused his kidneys to shut down.
