Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, better known as Evans, pleaded guilty to the allegations levelled aginst him at the federal high court in Ikeja, Lagos, on Wednesday. The kidnap kingpin pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and conspiracy charges levelled against him at the Lagos court. Evans, who has been in police custody since June 10, was charged with murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, amongst other crimes.

Abdulaziz Anka, the presiding judge, ruled that Evans and five others arraigned before the court be remanded in Kirikiri prisons till October 19, when the court shall proceed with the suit. He will also be charged with the abduction of Donatus Dunu, a police source had told TheCable.

Olukoya Ogungbeje, Evans’ lawyer, had subsequently filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit on behalf of his client, claiming that his fundamental rights have been abused by the police. According to the lawyer, the police had violated his client’s rights by detaining him since June 10 without charging him to court.

But speaking at the court today, David Igbodo, counsel to Ibrahim Idris, inspector general of police, said the police have a legal subsisting order to keep Evans for 90 days. He said following Evans’ arrest, the police had requested 90 days to carry out an investigation into the crimes committed by the kidnapping kingpin. The request was granted by the federal high court.
