This is unbelievable. A man was flogged 80 times while tied to a tree this week because he drank alcohol at a wedding 10 years ago.The victim was flogged by another man who hid his face beneath a black hood. Amnesty International, a group that campaigns to end abuses of human rights, condemned the incident – which reportedly took place because the man drank alcohol when he was 14 or 15-years-old.
It was said to be a punishment for the ‘crime’. Spokesman Philip Luther said: ‘The circumstances of this case are absolutely shocking.
‘No one, regardless of age, should be subjected to flogging; that a child was prosecuted for consuming alcohol and sentenced to 80 lashes beggars belief.’ The man, who has only been identified as ‘MR’, is said to have consumed alcohol at a wedding in March 2007. According to the Public Prosecutor of Kashmar, MR consumed alcohol during the wedding – and at the same event an argument caused a fight that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old. The public prosecutor has conceded that MR was not involved in the murder. His flogging sentence was only for drinking alcohol.
