Roger Federer claimed that ‘it’s almost time to retire’ after his first-round US Open win, after maintaining his 100% record in opening ties in Flushing Meadows. The 37-year-old Swiss is coming towards the end of his career, but has kept any potential retirement plans largely under lock and key. However, unprompted, the 20-time Grand Slam champion hinted that he may be hanging up his racquet rather soon. When asked about his unbeaten record in 18 first-round matches at the US Open, he replied: ‘I’m very happy to be back here in New York healthy.
‘The last couple of years have been difficult so it’s nice to be back feeling really good. ‘I’m happy I never stumbled at the first hurdle. ‘It’s almost time to retire… but not yet! ‘I’m happy I played well tonight.’
His retirement statement was greeted with a smattering of boos from the New York crowd and generated plenty of panic on social media.
