A 29-year old male teacher attached to the popular Down Syndrome Foundation School in Surulere, Lagos, has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a female student of the facility.
Tthe teacher, Kabiru Wasiu, reportedly took the advantage of one of the females, a 31-year old and engaged her in sex romps for almost three months before he was eventually caught.
The incident happened at 43, Adegoke Street, Masha Road in Surulere, Lagos where the foundation was located.
The offence attracted several condemnations despite the age of the victim because of her health condition.
The defendant, Wasiu, was said to have been employed by the management and not quite long after he started the job, he started sleeping with the victim. When the parents of the victim discovered that her private part was tampered with, they complained to the management, which kept watch on the victim and eventually caught Wasiu.
He was handed over to the Police at the Gender Section of the State Command at Ikeja for interrogation.
It was gathered that during interrogation, Wasiu admitted that he had carnal knowledge of her but claimed that it was with her consent because she was already an adult.
However, the police found him culpable and charged him before the Ogba Magistrates court for unlawfully having canal knowledge of the victim.
The prosecutor, Mr. Christopher John, informed the court that the victim was a patient with Down Syndrome and was taken to the centre for rehabilitation and treatment before the teacher took advantage of her.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. Peter Nwaka, did not take his plea and denied him bail.
The court directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to DPP for advice.
It was gathered that the matter will be transferred to High Court if the DPP finds Wasiu culpable.
The police said that he may be jailed for up to 10 years if he was tried, found guilty and convicted for the offence he committed.
