A traffic robber has been arrested by the police on Monday morning at Alaka bridge, Lagos Island road, Alaka. It was gathered that a gang of three traffic robbers came on a commercial motorcycle (Okada) to the area around 6.30am to dispossess motorists of their valuables.

It was reported that the three men gang had taken advantage of the slight holdup in the area to attack and rob Mrs. Temitope who was going to office in her Honda Accord with registration number EKY 520 DF.

According to Temitope, “As I was descending from the bridge at Alaka to enter Ojuelegba road, I noticed three men on Okada facing Island road. The two of them at the back were looking at me suspiciously. I began to suspect they might be traffic robbers. Immediately, I rolled up my glasses and locked my doors.

“I thought they have left, but all of a sudden, they appeared by my right hand side. Before I knew it, just in a single hit, they have broken my glass on the passenger side completely and begun to drag my handbag and other things available on the vehicle’s seat with me.”

It was gathered that on sighting police was approaching the scene, the robbers quickly struggled to escape. However, one of them, who later identified himself as Ismaila Yisa, ran to collide with another vehicle coming behind him through which he sustained dislocation and was eventually caught. But the two others narrowly took to their heels.

Yisa said, “we came all the way from Amukoko area to rob here at Alaka. “I came to Lagos from Eyenkorin in Kwara state a few years ago. I used to be a motor boy to a commercial vehicle before I later joined my friends in this robbery enterprise.”

A can of substance suspected to be chemical aiding quick motor glass breaking was recovered from the suspect.

Police officials have said Alaka bridge had been one of the roads with frequent experience of traffic robbery in the past, adding that it was the reason police vehicular patrol teams were directed to station on the road.

“Alaka bridge around Iponri had been one of the road with frequent traffic robbery. Those bad boys were taking advantage of occasional heavy traffic there to perpetrate their unlawful act. And to prevent such occurrence, the Lagos state Commissioner of Police directed that police vehicular and motorcycle patrol teams be stationed around the place.

“We have recorded stories of success there. We have arrested a lot of them and that is why the road has been safe for its users”, one of the police officials said.

He promised that manhunt would be launched after the fleeing members of the gang.
