The Red Devils’ boss left the forward out of his matchday squad on Saturday and his side Went down to a 3-1 defeat to the Hammers.

Mourinho instead started Anthony Martial in his place, but the Frenchman failed to have any impact on the match as United were well beaten by the home side.

Mourinho was asked after the match whether, on hindsight, he might have made a mistake in dropping the Chilean against West Ham.

Mourinho defended himself, claiming that it wasn’t a mistake on his part, that it was the fans who wanted to see Sanchez dropped.

“Look, for many months people have been asking for Martial, Martial, Martial,” Mourinho told BT Sport.

“For many months people have been saying that Alexis Sanchez has not been playing well enough.

“So this week it was time to agree and to say let’s give a chance to Martial and let’s leave Alexis out.”

The Portuguese also pinpointed the three moments where Manchester United lost the game against West Ham .

“We had a reaction but an own goal makes 2-0,” he added.

“We are not aggressive and intense enough, then we are losing 2-0. With an offside goal and an own goal. Second half we took time to react. Their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves.

“I think a team that comes with that mental fragility of the bad results come here and is losing 1-0 isn’t the best way to start. A goal offside, last Tuesday with VAR wouldn’t be a goal, but no VAR, linesman mistake and a goal.

“The third goal isn’t a mistake from the linesman but rather the referee, it was a clear foul on Rashford from Zabaleta.”
