A majority of us have tried online dating. Let’s face it, online dating does make meeting people easier especially if you’re the shy kind.
There’re loads of people to meet online and so many dating sites to try out. So yeah, if you’re looking to meet people, be it for friendship purposes, dating or just expanding your network of friends then online dating is a good option. However, it does come with it’s cons. In this day and age, looking for love online is a bad idea and here’s why.
1. Too many scammers.
Nowadays, there are so many scams, heck life itself feels like a scam. On an online dating profile, you can be anyone you want to be. And because of this reason, there are so many fake profiles on online dating platforms. You could be chatting up with a person whose real intentions are to hurt you. If you think about it, there are so many malicious people out there. Rapists, ex-convicts and what not. So, you could be setting a trap for yourself unknowingly. At the rate at which people are going missing and ending up murdered, you definitely need to watch out.

2. There are too many options and that makes it hard for you to weed out the good from the bad.
Take Tinder for example. Hundreds and hundreds of profiles. You don’t know who is good and who is bad. Who is worth chatting to and who is not. It’s like a gamble. You swipe right, hoping they will swipe right too and start chatting and only then do you decide whether you want to keep talking to them or not. If you think about it, the whole process is extremely time consuming and more often than not, a waste of precious time.
3. You judge people solely based on looks.
Since you’re not meeting this person physically, you judge them based on how they look on the photo and maybe the bio. The problem with this is that the person could be using really old photos or overly filtered photos. You meet them and they look nothing like the photos they had put up. Such a waste of time huh? Then again, you could fail to swipe on a profile simply because the photos are not good enough but maybe the person is simply not photogenic enough and you end up losing out on a really good gentleman simply because he does not fit your description of the quintessentially handsome bearded man. If you meet people in real life, it’s a lot better since what you see is what you get.
4. You cannot tell whether there’s a connection or not from chatting online.
Even though sometimes you meet someone online and the chats are fire and you feel really connected, you still have not met in real life and that could all change when you meet in person. You could chat for months with someone then the minute you meet, there’s just no attraction, zilch, it’s not the same as when you were chatting on the phone. Maybe the person is shy or has weird habits or things like bad breath, things you cannot tell when chatting to someone online. Point is, online dating can lead to a lot of disappointments. Expect the unexpected.
5. There are many places you can meet a potential partner aside from dating apps.
Instead of scrolling through profiles of people you’re not even sure if they’re a good match or not, why not initiate a conversation with that guy or girl with whom you gym together? Or allow your friends to introduce you to their mates? In fact, it’s said that the most successful relationships are the ones where friends introduce each other to their potential partners. This is mostly because a friend knows you and knows your needs and maybe in a better position to figure out if you will connect with this person they’re trying to introduce you to or not. So next time your friend tells you that “There’s someone I want you to meet”, be open to the blind date. That’s how Meghan Markle met Prince Harry and maybe that’s how you will also meet your prince, not through Tinder.
