5 Important Things To Know Before The Visit

In Nigeria, meeting his parents might be a sign that he thinks putting a ring on that finger is a good idea. But relax, his parents are human (we hope!) so just like preparing for a job interview, you’ll need to do some research.

Before meeting his parents put these into consideration:

1. Mother – Son Relationship

You’ll have to observe from afar and figure out if your boyfriend is a mama’s boy or if the relationship is distant. This will help you watch how to relate with her and him in the same room. You don’t want to show so much PDA to a mama’s boy in front of mama.

2. Get to know his father

In addition to details about his mum, find about his dad. Not necessarily diving into his ancestral background and all that, but getting to know his peculiarities and things he’s interested in. Try not to talk to only him before his wife will come for you!

3. Cultural sensitivity

Most parents don’t want a woman that’ll steer their son away from the customs or traditions they’ve taught him. So, if he’s not your tribe or you didn’t grow up in Nigeria, do some research so you don’t over do or under do.

4. Consider bringing a gift

Nothing too expensive or too cheap. You really can’t go wrong with wine – after you’ve asked if they drink wine and what kind, you can also get a bit personal and buy things for them separately. Once again, ask your boyfriend first.

5. Don’t get involved in family drama

Yes, this could happen, and sometimes these arguments can be awkward. Whatever you do, be sensitive and don’t take sides. The last place you want to be is in the middle of a fight with people you just met!

In all of this, don’t forget to be yourself, and if your parents disapprove of your wedding when you’re ready, here’s what to do.
