A man accused of raping a two-week old baby leaving it fighting for life has been given 24-hour guard while in custody. The 25-year-old is being held at HMP Maghaberry, Northern Ireland, following the arrest for allegedly raping the newborn baby. Because of the nature of his crime he is being held as a ‘Special Person at Risk’ meaning that he will be kept away from other prisoners.

He is also being monitored in case he tries to kill himself.

He appeared in court last week charged with rape and causing GBH to a child. He will return to court later this week for a preliminary hearing.

The attack is under investigation by detectives from the Serious Crime Branch. His name cannot be reported in order to protect the baby’s identity and he has been remanded in custody at Maghaberry prison.
