A woman feels her late brother’s not resting in peace because his grave is surrounded by latrine water. The 31-year-old woman identified as Cebisile Dlamini of Amatikwe in Inanda, north of Durban, South Africa told Daily Sun her late brother Mboniseni died in 2014 after he was stabbed.

“He was buried near his house at the Congo Cemetery in Inanda,” she said. “The grave was dug up by men from the area, but it was too deep and it reached a sewerage pipe. “No one suspected anything wrong would happen.”

Cebisile said the problem began in 2015 when they saw water on top of the grave and became worried because it had a bad smell.

“One of the residents said a pipe in the grave was possibly leaking,” she said.

Cebisile said she then contacted the councillor for assistance.

“He said he would contact the relevant department to help. “But nothing has happened. Instead, my brother’s grave is sinking deeper.”

She said the smelly water sometimes came to the top of the grave.“When that started happening, I put corrugated iron on top of the grave. “But now the corrugated iron is damaged. “The grass keeps growing. I often remove it but it grows back quickly because of the water.”

Cebisile said she feared her brother would get angry, which could lead to bad luck for the family.“He’s not resting in peace as his body is covered in latrine water. “I need the municipality to dig up the grave, fix the leaking pipe and then bury him again,” she said.

Councillor Wiseman Nyaba said: the exhumation process has started.

“Congo Cemetery is illegal, so when the body is exhumed, it will be taken to Tafuleni Cemetery,” said Nyaba.Princess Nkabane, a spokeswoman for the municipality, said she would have to ask the relevant department.
