Swiss firm makes cow food that reduces farts and burps to cut climate change

Cows burp and fart way more than they need to, says a Swiss firm that has developed food that will make the animals less gassy. Agolin has created food that cuts methane emissions from the cows’ livestock in a bid to help combat global warming. A single cow produces the equivalent of about three tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, says the firm based in Biere near Lausanne in Switzerland.

Co-founder and managing director Kurt Schaller told Reuters its new specialist feed can reduce the numbers by 10%.

The UN says livestock farming alone is responsible for up to 18% of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming. Nearly a quarter of that comes from bovine flatulence. Cows’ burps represent 4% of all greenhouse gas emissions
