Dear Deolu,

I think I am supposed to apologize to you for the break up because I did the breaking up. But I am glad I did break up with you so I won’t apologize. It was difficult and definitely a bold step for me. Thank you for teaching me patience, honestly, I could have managed, I could have stayed. I could have condoned it all, at least you had plans to marry me but I just couldn’t deal anymore.

The reason I won’t apologize is because our relationship became toxic. It became verbally abusive and I would have said you were entirely at fault, but that would be unfair. So let’s say that it was 95% your fault and 5% my fault.

The funny thing is, I began thinking that relationships were supposed to be all fights. I felt it was all insults and nothing enjoyable. Picking your calls became a horror and spending time with you was no longer pleasurable. It got to a point that I always wanted to run from you and yes, I fell out of love with you.

I was all about love before we met, but you took that away while we dated. After I left you, I stopped believing in love for a long time, but I am over that now, I grew to love myself again. I took everything you put me through, felt it, embraced the pain, dealt with it, and became better.

So yes, thank you for teaching me patience, you taught me the true meaning of endurance. I finally understood what “give him a long rope to tie himself means.” The joy on my friend’s face when I told her we broke up, I will never forget.

Now I’m dating a guy who absolutely loves and adores me and I love him too. From you, I have learnt what to do, what not to do, and how to value myself. I am in a better place than I was with you and I am really glad I had the courage to leave you.
