New photos reveal Tyler Perry‘s transformation into former Secretary Of State Colin Powell. The actor is very convincing as the retired four-star general.
Unlike most of the other stars in Vice, Perry actually got Powell’s blessing to play him, which director Adam McKay explained at a SAG-AFTRA screening in New York City on Sunday.
McKay joked during the screening that, ‘Only Tyler Perry could just be like, “I’m calling Colin Powell.” I mean, that just cracked me up right away,’ McKay said at the screening (courtesy of Vulture).
‘The whole idea of Tyler Perry, I was told the idea, and then he came by my office, and I have never met anyone with more presence in my entire life,’ the director added.
A GQ profile of Quincy Jones in January revealed that Powell was ‘annoyed’ with Perry, best known for his cross-dressing Madea character, playing him, but that wasn’t entirely true.
The Washington Post reached out to Powell’s office, with his assistant clarifying that Powell reached out to Jones to connect him to Perry.
‘He and Mr Perry had a nice conversation and even exchanged copies of their recent books and General Powell offered his services to Mr Perry, if he needed any or had any questions,’ Powell’s rep said.
