Facials are always a good idea. They’re like ‘servicing’ for your face, necessary to keep your skin in good condition.

And even though we’ll all love to be pampered at a spa, it’s not exactly cheap. But no worries, you can give yourself a facial from the comfort of your home if you don’t want to go to a spa. And we’ll walk you right through the process. To do a facial at home, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Face Wash
  • Face Scrub
  • For oily skins – a clay mask (Bentonite, Rhassoul or any clay mask will do)
  • For dry skins – a sheet mask
  • Rosewater or your favourite toner
  • Moisturizer
Step 1 – Cleanse

It’s important to start on a very clean slate. So the first thing to do is wash your face thoroughly to remove all traces of oil, dirt and make-up.

Step 2 – Exfoliate

If you don’t have a face scrub readily available at home, you can make yourself by using honey and sugar. Massage the scrub gently on your face for two minutes and then rinse it off.

Step 3 – Steam

Steaming has amazing benefits for the skin. It opens up your pores and lifts oil and impurities to the surface of your skin. It also prepares your skin for the next step.

You can use a facial steamer, but if you don’t have one, here’s what to do:

Heat up about one litre of water till it’s boiled and pour into a bucket. Set a timer for 10 minutes, then bend over the bucket and place a large towel over your head to trap the steam. Make sure your face is not too close to the steam so you don’t scald your skin. Wait it out for 10 minutes and you’re done.

Afterwards, wash your face again with your face wash to remove all the oil and gunk that has seeped from your pores.

Step 4 – Treatment mask

Once you’ve steamed, your face is ready to receive some nourishment. If you have oily skin, clay masks are best. But if have dry to combination skin, a hydrating sheet mask will work better. Apply your mask of choice, and leave it on for about 30 minutes. After that, rinse it off with lukewarm water. You’ll be surprised how soft and smooth your face will feel afterwards.

Step 5 – Tone

After your face has soaked up all the goodness from the mask, toners are important to restore pH balance and seal your pores. Rosewater is nourishing and works for all skin type so it’s a great option.

Step 6 – Moisturize

This is the last step in your facial. It’s important to replenish the moisture levels in your skin. Massage your favourite moisturizer into your skin in upward circular motions and let it absorb.

Step 7 – Glow!

Yep, go forth and enjoy your new glowy skin.

For better and lasting results, don’t wear make-up immediately after your facial. Wait for some hours or better still the next day.
