water hydrates your skin

Drinking water is necessary for the body as we can hardly survive a few days without it. Water helps the organs of the body function properly and keeps everything in good condition. The skin is the largest organ of the body and it needs water as well but not in the way that you think.

You’ve probably heard all your life that drinking lots of water will keep your skin hydrated. We’re sorry to burst your bubble (pun intended) but it won’t.

When you drink water, it goes to your stomach and runs through your intestines. Then it gets absorbed into the bloodstream and filtered by the kidneys. At this point, it will hydrate the cells in your body but it can’t get to the surface or outer layers of your skin because it just doesn’t work that way.

So is water useless for skin?

Don’t get us wrong, water helps your skin but only at a cellular level. It flushes out toxins from the skin and your body as a whole but no matter how many glasses you drink a day (whether it’s 8 or 80) it won’t hydrate your skin!

Applying products topically remains the most effective way to hydrate your skin. So if you really want properly moisturized skin which is plump and elastic, go for moisturizing creams and lotions.

For the Thomases that still don’t believe, here’s a little experiment for you to try: for a whole week, drink as much water as you can and don’t apply any products whatsoever on your skin. In the second week, drink half as much water as you would normally and moisturize your skin properly.

If you carefully observed the results, you’ll be shocked at how dry your skin looks the first week and how moisturized it is the second week.
