The member representing Ayamelum Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr Uche Okafor, has raised the alarm over the activities of herdsmen in the area.

Okafor urged the state government to secure the lives and property of his constituents from the stranglehold of Fulani herdsmen during the Yuletide. The lawmaker, who stated this during the plenary of the House on Thursday, said Fulani herdsmen had invaded his constituency and destroyed people’s property, thereby creating apprehension among the inhabitants. The lawmaker said farming was the sole occupation of his constituents and added that with the destruction of farm produce, his people would have nothing to celebrate the Yuletide with.

He noted that most people from the area were afraid of coming back home to celebrate the Christmas with their kith and kin because of the activities of the herdsmen.

Okafor said, “Farming is the sole occupation of my constituents. With the destruction of the farm produce, my people will have nothing to celebrate the Yuletide.

“Above all, the people of Ayamelum outside the community are afraid of coming back home to celebrate Christmas with their families, because of the presence and activities of Fulani herdsmen.

“We need enough security at strategic places in the community to safeguard lives and property of the people.”

The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Mrs Rita Maduagwu, while responding, urged Okafor to raise what she called a substantive motion on the issue to further push his case.
