Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to Madrid as he faces trial at the Provincial Court. The Juventus superstar has been accused of not paying over £12m in tax on his image rights between 2011 and 2014 during his time with Real Madrid.

Ronaldo has agreed a deal to pay the Spanish authorities and is to accept a two-year prison sentence.

Ronaldo was in action on the pitch on Monday night as Juventus continued their unbeaten campaign with a 3-0 victory over Chievo. The 33-year-old was dressed casually as he arrived in court alongside girlfriend Georgina Rodriguez.

Cristiano Ronaldo has accepted the deal with Spanish authorities, as expected.

A court spokesman confirmed Ronaldo would be handed a fine and a suspended sentence.

Because it is his first offence he will not serve any time behind bars.

Ronaldo will pay around £16.5m to the courts.

Ronaldo has been accused of not paying over £12m in tax on his image rights between 2011 and 2014.

In the summer, he agreed a deal to pay the Spanish authorities £16.9m and accept a two-year prison sentence.

Ronaldo won’t be the only one appearing in court today. His former Real teammate Xabi Alonso will also be in Madrid. Alonso has been charged with defrauding tax authorities of €2m – but denies any wrongdoing.
