Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas has stolen the headlines from the Portuguese League Cup winners after aiding a fan who collapsed in the aftermath of the penalty shoot-out win over Porto.

Varandes was making his way to the pitch to celebrate the success at the Municipal Stadium when he noticed a supporter had slumped to the floor.

The practising doctor immediately jumped into the crowd and administered first aid on the individual at once.

He remained with the fan, whose current condition is unknown, until medical staff arrived on the scene.

The incident followed a pulsating Taca de Liga final, which Primeira Liga leaders Portolooked on course to win for the first time in their history after taking the lead through Fernando Andrade on 79 minutes.

Sergio Conceicao’s side held the lead until added-on time when a VAR-assisted Bas Dost penalty ensured the game had to be settled by a shoot-out.

Marcel Keizer’s team had beaten Braga on penalties to reach the showcase final and repeated that success to claim the cup.
