Meghan Markle turned heads with a clashing colour-block outfit of purple and red that might have been a nod to Princess Diana. The Duchess of Sussex sported a striking purple Aritzia dress, teamed with a red coat by Sentaler and matching shoes during her visit to Birkenhead with Prince Harry. But while the colour code might seem like an unusual choice, one member of the royal family has done the look several times before.

Harry’s late mother Diana donned a Catherine Walker outfit in the same colour palette on a trip to the Taj Mahal in India, in 1992. At the time, the Princess of Wales made headlines by posing on a bench alone in front of the famous mausoleum.

She also wore similar shades during a visit to Thailand, and again to a film premiere in London in 1988. The fuchsia and violet asymmetrical Catherine Walker ball gown was later sold at an auction.
