A pervert teacher has avoided a jail sentence despite admitting having sex with three schoolboys aged just 15 and 16. Heidi Domangue Verett, 34, confessed on March 22 in court that she abused the three boys in her home in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, USA, over the course of two months beginning in November 2016.
Verrett was originally charged with three felony sex crimes. But she was later offered a deal that allowed her to instead plead guilty to three misdemeanor counts of carnal knowledge of a juvenile and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile.
That deal saw her avoid facing time behind bars. It also means she will not have to register as a sex offender – and she will be legally allowed to teach again in two years.
Ultimately, the former substitute teacher was sentenced to six months of suspended jail time, which is essentially a probation period that allows the person convicted to remain out of jail on a judge’s discretion.
She was also ordered to pay a $900 fine and will serve two years of probation following her suspended jail sentence.
It is unclear why she was offered such a lenient plea deal.
Verett’s home was reportedly a popular hangout for boys in her neighborhood. She had a 14-year-old son who was friends with the teens that would later be identified as her victims in court. According to the Houma Times, parents in the small Louisiana community felt safe letting their children hang out at Verrett’s home because she was a teacher.
