The team of foreign medical experts who arrived in Nigerian to assess the medical needs of the leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, have concluded their preliminary assessment.

Based on their assessment, the medical experts were of the opinion that Mr El-Zakzaky and his wife would have to be flown abroad for proper medical attention at well-equipped centres abroad.

Speaking with newsmen, one of the consultants on the team, Kazim Akber Dhalla, who is an eye surgeon, said: “Based on the preliminary assessment we have conducted, both the Sheikh and his wife have got multiple health issues.

“Some of them have already been diagnosed but our impression is that they will require further assessments, more treatment, perhaps these will be needed (to be done) in higher medical centres maybe outside the country.”

Recall that on Saturday, the Iranian government, through a statement by the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Seyed Mousavi, had commended President Muhammadu Buhari-led government for allowing a foreign medical team to examine Mr El-Zakzaky.

Mr Mousavi, expressed hope that the trend would further open up interaction and constructive talks between authorities of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN, and the Nigerian government.

According to him, such interaction would result in the settlement of problems and the release of the top cleric.

The medical delegation led by UK-based Islamic Human Rights Commission, IHRC, visited the cleric and his wife, Mallima Zeenah, on Thursday and highlighted the need for urgent investigations into their health which it hoped would be carried out in the next couple of days.

The IHRC, an NGO which campaigns for justice, said in a statement it “acknowledges the authorities’ change of position in making this possible and hopes this heralds a full and just resolution of the situation.”
