Bulgaria head coach Krasimir Balakov resigns following racist abuse of England players

Krasimir Balakov, the head coach of Bulgaria has resigned after the racist abuse of England’s players during their Euro 2020 qualifying match in Sofia on Monday night, (Oct. 14)The 53-year-old also confirmed he is resigning from his role as president of the Bulgarian Football Union, while the entire BFU Executive Committee also stepping down from their respective positions.

Speaking on Friday, Mihaylov said: “My decision to step down has nothing to do with prime-minister Borissov asking for my resignation the day after the game vs England. My patience is over.

“We did what we had to do regarding the security during the game v England. Bulgaria is not a racist country.”

This comes after Borislav Mihaylo, the president of the Bulgarian Football Association to resign from his position. 10 Bulgraian football fans have also been arrested since the racism scandal.

At the Euro 2020 qualifying clash, Bulgarian fans directed shameful ‘ Nazi salutes and racist chants at Three Lions players in Sofia. The match was halted on two separate occasions by UEFA officials due to abuse aimed at England players despite their 6-0 victory in Bulgaria.

UEFA has opened disciplinary procedures against both Bulgaria and England for their fans’ behaviour during the game.
