Veteran south african broadcaster, Xolani Gwala died on Friday after a lengthy battle with cancer. His family confirmed the news on 702 on Friday.

The smooth-voiced local star left an indelible mark on South African radio with his hard-hitting style and unique connection to his listeners.

He worked as a broadcast journalist for 20 years in South Africa and abroad, for a variety of platforms. He wore many hats over the years as a reporter, news anchor, producer, talk show host, news editor and current affairs programme presenter in both English and Zulu, on radio and television.

The news of his passing was confirmed by a statement issued by family spokesperson, Matsi Modise, on behalf of Peggy-Sue.

“The children and I and the rest of the family are devastated to share with you that our dearest XG, father, friend, broadcasting icon and campaigner for cancer awareness tragically lost his brave battle against this veracious decease in the early hours of this morning (Friday),” Modise stated on Friday’s Radio 702 broadcast.

The statement further explained that Xolani Gwala had been battling with colon cancer — a cancer of the colon or rectum that is located at the digestive tract’s lower end — for as long as two years.

While this inevitability was realised months ago, the family noted that every treatment option was explored.

“We were hopeful and always knew the gravity of the situation. From February to June this year, Xolani took part in a world-first clinical trial in Israel. His medical team has been amazing and we have enormous admiration for the work they are doing in advancing cancer treatment.

“While the miracle did not materialise, these last few months have been precious and we are eternally grateful that Xolani has been able to spend them with us as a family this journey ha made our family much stronger and has brought us together,” the statement read.

As the news of his death spread, his fans, colleagues from the SABC and 702, and more paid tribute to him on social media.
