Photos showing the heart breaking moment the Afghanistan flag was paraded around the Tokyo Paralympics opening ceremony today, August 24, but none of the war torn country’s athletes was present at the games, have been shared online.

Afghanistan would have had only two representatives at the event, Para-taekwondo athlete Zakia Khudadadi and discus thrower Hossain Rasouli. But both couldn’t make it .

A volunteer stepped in to raise the flag of the Taliban controlled country as the job of bearing Afghanistan’s black, red and green flag which the Taliban is tearing down across the country – was given to a UN representative.

About 4,400 athletes will compete in Japan.
