Christopher Owen Ayres was an American stage actor, voice actor, stage director, ADR director, fight choreographer and scriptwriter who worked on a number of Japanese anime series at Funimation, OkraTron 5000, New Generation Pictures and formerly Seraphim Digital/Sentai Filmworks.

He started his acting career at age six and performed on and off Broadway as well as in numerous regional productions.

At the age of just eight he worked as a voice actor on TV series Gatchaman and in 1983 he joined Super Dimension Fortress Macross  as the voice of Lynn Kalfun.

He made his name in anime, famously voicing Dragon Ball character Frieza, as well as Kei Kurono from Gantz, Prince Soma from Black Butler, and Shingen Takeda in the Sengoku Basara series.

 

Causes of Death

Chris’s passing was announced by Krystal on social media, with no cause of death revealed.

“Christopher Owen Ayres passed away peacefully, held close by his mother, brother, and girlfriend.”

She added: “I hope that wherever you are, the first thing you did was take a long, deep breath with your perfect lungs and danced again.”

In 2017, Ayres revealed that he had been diagnosed with end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and he eventually required a double lung transplant to survive.

He was open about his health struggles on social media and regularly posted pictures of treatment and various hospital stays.

In 2019 he posted that he had received his transplant tweeting: “I got my lung transplant on October 31st, 2019 after almost two years of being on the transplant list.”
