Outrage as Meek Mill shoots music video inside Ghana’s president office

Meek Mill, the US rapper, has come under fire on Twitter Ghana after he shared a teaser for a new music video he filmed at the Jubilee House.

Jubilee House is the presidential palace in Accra that serves as a residence and office for the president of Ghana.

The rapper, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, was in Ghana to perform at Afro Nation, in December.

In the now-viral video, Mill, alongside his team, is seen delivering his bars at the podium of Ghana’s highest seat of power — where President Akufo-Addo normally addresses the nation.

The footage has sparked a chorus of condemnation from Ghanaians on Twitter, with some users arguing that the Jubilee House should not be a place for someone to film a music video.

In response to the widespread criticism on social media, Meek Mill has since deleted the post and tendered an apology.

“My apologies to the people if any disrespect! We still gonna push to make the connection between black people in America and Africa … what I’m trying to do is more than a video and you should see coming soon! My apologies to the the office also!” Mill wrote.

“To the people of Ghana no video I drop is ever meant to disrespect the people of Ghana …. The fastest way to make connection is thru music and I wanted to do that with displaying art … im in my 30’s from America and didn’t know much about the lifestyle here.”

Despite his apology, some Ghanaians took to Twitter to express their disappointment with the rapper.

Sam Ablakwa, a member of Ghana’s parliament, North Tongu, called for the sack of those who permitted the video shoot.

“All those responsible for this despicable desecration of the Jubilee House by Meek Mill must be fired immediately,” he wrote.

“How do those explicit lyrics from the president’s lectern project Ghana positively? Is Ghana’s seat of government no longer a high security installation?”
