New York Declares State of Emergency as Flash Flood Unleashes Up to Seven Inches of Rain

New York City’s Mayor Eric Adams faced criticism this morning for his delayed response to a rapidly escalating flash flood disaster.

The heavy rainfall, stemming from the remnants of Tropical Storm Ophelia, marked some of the worst weather in New York City since Hurricane Ida struck in 2021, tragically leading to 13 deaths in basement apartments due to unexpected flooding.

While NYC emergency Twitter accounts had issued warnings about the impending rain on Thursday, it wasn’t until after the morning rush hour on Friday that emergency alerts were sent to residents’ phones. Brooklyn, in particular, witnessed a day’s worth of rainfall within just three hours, a level of precipitation typically expected only once every 100 years.

Mayor Adams did not make a public appearance until 11 am, drawing attention to the fact that he had been attending a secret fundraiser organized by Friends of Eric Adams the previous night. This event had ‘suggested donations’ of $2,100 each.

The flash flood emergency has now placed approximately 23 million people under flood warnings across the tri-state area, with entire streets in Brooklyn submerged underwater. Many individuals have shared distressing images of flooded basements, and LaGuardia’s Terminal A has also been inundated.

The NYC subway system has almost entirely halted operations, and buses in Brooklyn struggled to navigate through the floodwaters. In the midst of this crisis, the state is working on arrangements to safely transport school children back home, with efforts underway to restore bus and train services before school dismissal.

During a press conference held on Friday, Mayor Adams faced tough questions from the press regarding the delayed response. In response, he mentioned that his deputies were actively managing the situation, emphasizing that leadership extends beyond the mayor’s office.

  1. Have you ever considered about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and everything. Nevertheless think of if you added some great pictures or videos to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with images and clips, this website could certainly be one of the best in its field. Amazing blog!

  2. Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!

  3. Wonderful blog! Do you have any tips and hints for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own website soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally overwhelmed .. Any ideas? Bless you!

  4. Hi would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with? I’m looking to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a difficult time choosing between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your design seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S My apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!
