‘Our husbands don’t touch us at night due to heat’ — women protest power outage in Port-Harcourt

Some women from the Diobu community in Rivers state yesterday visited the office of the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) to protest against the incessant power outage.

During the peaceful protest, the women lamented over what they referred to as their inability to engage in sexual intercourse with their husbands due to heat caused by the alleged poor power supply to their homes.

The protesting women from some streets in Mile 2 and Mile 3 in Diobu carried placards with inscriptions such as ‘no light, no payment’, ‘the heat is too much’, ‘we lack romance with our husbands’, and ‘our husbands no longer touch us at night’.

In a now-viral video, the women barricaded the PHED office near Isaac Boro Park in Port Harcourt to express their displeasure.

“No sex. As light no dey, no more sex. My buttocks no fit come down,” one of the women could be heard in the video speaking in pidgin English.

Another woman said: “Heat too much. I cannot have sex due to this heat”.
