Actress Kemi Lala Akindoju has sparked a conversation about traditional marriage norms, particularly the practice of women adopting their husband’s surname.
She suggests that if we truly want to embrace the idea of “two shall become one,” couples should consider merging their surnames instead.
She questioned why children automatically inherit the father’s surname and state of origin, as well as the notion that the man “owns” the child.
Kemi also pointed out that scripture emphasizes the man cleaving to the woman, adding that women should have the freedom to choose whether to change their name, keep it, or even hyphenate it.
